NIZAMABAD — Shaik Riyaz, the “prime accused” in the murder of a police constable, was shot dead in an alleged encounter while attempting to escape from the Government General Hospital (GGH) on Monday.
Riyaz, 24, was apprehended by Nizamabad police on Sunday from the Sarangapur forest area following a scuffle with one Asif. Both men sustained injuries during the incident and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
While receiving treatment on the fourth floor of the hospital, Riyaz allegedly attempted to snatch the weapon of an Armed Reserve constable in a bid to escape. In response, police retaliated, and Riyaz was shot dead, according to preliminary reports, Telangana today reported.
The sudden incident caused panic among patients and staff. Additional police forces have been deployed at the hospital as a precautionary measure. Riyaz had earlier killed 42-year-old CCS constable E Pramod around 8.30 pm on Friday at Vinayak Nagar. He allegedly stabbed Pramod in the chest while being escorted to the police station on a two-wheeler before fleeing the scene.
On Sunday, reports circulated that Riyaz had been killed in an exchange of fire in the Sarangapur forest area, but Police Commissioner P Sai Chaitanya dismissed the rumours, stating that Riyaz was caught alive and admitted to GGH for treatment.
