Congress Questions Fadnavis’ Claims on Investments Secured at WEF Summit

Date:

NEW DELHI — The Congress on Friday questioned Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s claims about massive investments secured during his recent visit to Davos for the World Economic Forum summit.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters, senior Congress leader and Maharashtra spokesperson Atul Londhe Patil said the Fadnavis government had claimed that Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) worth ₹30 lakh crore were signed during the visit.

Patil asked how many of the companies that signed the MoUs were properly listed and registered. Citing information available with him, he alleged that 70–80 per cent of these companies were not even registered entities.

He also questioned their financial capacity to honour the commitments made. “How can such companies invest thousands of crores when they lack basic registration or financial strength?” he asked.

Patil pointed out that in 2023–24, the then Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government claimed MoUs worth ₹3.6 lakh crore, while in 2024–25 the Fadnavis government claimed agreements worth ₹15 lakh crore.

“With the addition of the ₹30 lakh crore claimed this year, the total promised investment over three years comes to nearly ₹50 lakh crore,” he said.

Questioning the credibility of these figures, Patil asked why such massive investment promises had not translated into actual production or employment.

“Where is the investment on the ground? Where are the jobs?” he asked, alleging that none of the claimed investments had materialised.

Patil noted that the investment amount claimed over the past three years was equivalent to Maharashtra’s GDP. “If this were true, the government should have been able to clear its ₹10 lakh crore debt, waive farmers’ loans, and provide ₹2,100 per month to women as promised by the Mahayuti alliance before the Assembly elections,” he said.

Accusing Fadnavis of misleading the public, Patil made a sharp remark, saying that the Chief Minister’s repeated false claims qualified him to become the Prime Minister.

He further cited an example of a corporate group with a net worth of ₹4,500 crore promising an investment of ₹45,000 crore. “How is that possible?” he asked.

Patil also questioned the fate of the Magnetic Maharashtra Summit, which was launched to project the state as a major investment destination.

“Has it been shelved because there can be no Magnetic Maharashtra before the Vibrant Gujarat Summit takes place?” he asked.
