Delhi Police nabbed the chain snatcher after Congress MP R. Sudha Ramakrishnan filed Police complaint and wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah who oversees law and order in Delhi
NEW DELHI — The Delhi Police’s Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) has arrested a man, identified as Sohan Rawat alias Sonu, involved in the chain snatching of Congress MP R. Sudha Ramakrishnan in the Chanakyapuri area of the national Capital when she was out for a morning walk along with fellow lawmaker DMK’s Rajathi.
According to reports, Police have also recovered the gold chain weighing 30.90 grammes of Congress MP along with two stolen scooties and four mobile phones from the possession of the accused
Ms Sudha Ramakrishnan, a Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthura, on Monday filed a police complaint and wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who oversees law and order in Delhi, and said her chain was snatched by “a man wearing a full helmet” on a scooter.
“At around 6.15 am-6.20 am, (August 4) when we were near the Poland Embassy’s Gate-3 and Gate-4, a man wearing a full helmet and thereby covering his face entirely and riding a scooty approached us from the opposite direction and snatched my gold chain and fled,” the Lok Sabha MP, who is currently attending the Parliament’s Monsoon Session, said.
“Sir, since he was coming slowly in the opposite direction, I did not suspect he could be a chain snatcher. As he pulled the chain from my neck, I have suffered injuries on my neck, and my churidar also got torn in the impact. Somehow managed not to fall, and both of us cried for help,” Ms Ramakrishnan added.
According to media reports, Ms Ramakrishnans aid they later spotted a mobile patrol vehicle of the Delhi Police and complained to them.
“Sir, this blatant attack on a woman, who is a Member of the Parliament, in a high-security zone like Chanakyapuri, which is full of embassies and protected institutions, is highly shocking to say the least,” the Congress MP wrote to Amit Shah.
“If a woman cannot walk safely in this high-priority zone in the national capital of India, where else can we feel safe and do our routine without fearing for our limbs, lives and valuables,” she said, referring to Chankyapuri, which houses several embassies and official residences of state governments.
Acting on the complaint, the police conducted a detailed analysis of CCTV footage from the incident route, gathered information with the help of local intelligence and also used technical surveillance to track the movement and identity of the accused.
After a thorough investigation, the accused Sonu, aged 24, was identified and apprehended. The accused is a “highly notorious and habitual offender with 26 previous involvements across various police stations of Delhi,” the police said, adding that he had recently been released from jail on June 27. — With media inputs
