NEW DELHI — The Congress has accused the Narendra Modi government of being insensitive and callous towards the growing child abuse cases in the country. The party said that the Supreme Court was forced to take ‘suo motu’ notice of more than 24000 Child Rape cases in the past six months.

Randeep Singh Surjewala, In-Charge of Communications at the AICC said the BJP government has shown complete insensitivity and apathy on this issue as more than 24000 child rape cases were reported across the country despite stringent laws.

As per the data collated by the Court, 24,212 FIRs have been registered from January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2019 pertaining to child rape. Out of the same, only 911 cases have been disposed of, which makes up for a mere 4% of the total.

He pointed out that the BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh having the highest number of FIRs registered at 3457, has only disposed of 22 FIRs which is a minuscule 3% of the total FIRs registered.

Attacking the Modi regime, Surjewala said the distressing figure of 24000 child rapes within a short span raises a multitude of questions and the BJP Govt cannot shed and run away from its responsibility.

“Is it not true that the BJP Govt has deliberately concealed the NCRB Data since 2016 and has not published any ‘Crime Against Women’ data in the past 3 years?” he asked, also raising the question of why the Government spends only 5 paise per girl child for the ‘Beti Bachao’ campaign.

The last NCRB Data of the year 2016 on Child Rapes [POSCO Cases] records an astounding figure of 90,000 pending cases of sexual Crimes Against Children.

The Congress leader alleged that the BJP  governments at the Centre and in UP have remained mute spectators, even as growing incidents of women and children being raped and killed on the streets, even dragged from their homes in the middle of night, gang-raped and being burnt alive took place in Aligarh, Pratapgarh, Gorakhpur, Barabanki, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Kushinagar, Muzaffarnagar and many other towns.

“Is it not true that only 20% of the Nirbhaya Fund released by the Centre to States have been utilized since 2015 to 2018? A sum of ₹1,813 crore has been disbursed by the Centre from 2015 to 2019. Of this, a sum of ₹854.66 crore was disbursed until 2018, out of which a mere ₹165.48 crore has been spent by various States and UTs”, he questioned.

He also alleged that the much-hyped ‘One Stop Centres’ for Rape Counselling have not been set up and most of them are only on paper since the past 5 years. On top of that, more than half the country does not even have any access to the ‘Fast Track Courts’.

He also alleged that BJP, which referred to women as ‘The Nation Builder’ in its 2014 Manifesto, has managed to bewilder women by the detrimental actions and inaction of its ministers, leaders and workers.

“Lip service and hype cannot be a substitute for securing the women and child”, he said, urging the BJP to actually walk the talk on women and child security issue.
