Comedic Genius and Malayalam Filmmaker Shafi Passes Away at 56

NEW DELHI – Shafi, the renowned Malayalam filmmaker, has passed away at the age of 56. Known for his comedic genius, Shafi breathed life into the Malayalam film industry with a string of memorable films. He passed away in the early hours of Saturday at a private hospital in Kochi, following a stroke he suffered on January 16. 

His real name was Rashid MH, but he was widely known by his moniker, Shafi.

Shafi hailed from a Muslim family and began his career as an assistant director under the guidance of esteemed filmmaker Rajasenan. His debut as a director came in 2001 with the film One Man So, marking the start of a successful career that spanned over a decade. During this time, he directed more than 10 films, most of which were celebrated for their comedy and light-hearted storytelling. Shafi’s collaborations with actor Dileep became a hallmark of his work, with films such as KalyanaramanMarykkundoru Kunjaadu, and Two Countries being among his most popular.

Shafi’s distinctive style of comedy made him a household name in Malayalam cinema. His films, such as Pulival KalyanamThommanum MakkalumMayavi, and Chattambinadu, remain cherished by fans. His ability to blend humour with relatable characters and situations set him apart from his peers. Shafi’s last film, Anandam Parmanandam, was released just before his death.

Actor Vishnu Unnikrishnan was among the first to confirm Shafi’s death on social media, writing, “Shafi sir has left us! He has left behind laughter and unforgettable stories, which will be cherished.”

Shafi’s funeral services were held at the Kaloor Muslim Juma Masjid. Before his burial, his body was kept at Edappally for fans and well-wishers to pay their last respects. As news of his death spread, fans across the state mourned the loss of a director who brought joy to millions through his films. Shafi’s legacy will live on in the laughter he created and the stories he told.
