Ceasefire: Foreign Secretary Misri Faces ‘Traitor,’ ‘Gaddar’ Epithets

Date:

Some social media posts even drag the seasoned diplomat’s daughters into the controversy by questioning their citizenship

NEW DELHI — India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience, has been subjected to intense online abuse and doxxing following India’s agreement to a ceasefire arrangement with Pakistan.

A section of right-wing social media users targeted Misri, his family, and even his daughters with vile language and personal attacks, media reports said on Sunday.

Insults and derogatory language, such as “Traitor,” “Gaddar,” and “Deshdrohi” have freely been used against the seasoned diplomat in personal attacks on him and his family, some posts even dragging his daughters into the controversy by questioning their citizenship.

Sanjukta (@Rimoru121145) wrote, “Traitor, Gaddar, Deshdrohi! You made your offspring settle outside of India before prostrating and offering your head to Pakistan. Shameful, absolutely shameful.”

Another user, @ScathingSamosa, went even further, tweeting, “You’re a pathetic sack of shit Misri. A weak, wimpy traitor. F*ck you.”

The anger was triggered by Misri’s recent remarks urging Pakistan to honour the ceasefire agreement. “Vikram Misri bol rahe Pakistan ko zimmedari samjhe aur ceasefire ka ullanghan na kare,” tweeted @ShivamMish78313, mocking his statement and calling it an act of “kayarta,” or cowardice.

Some users, however, condemned the wave of abuse, pointing out the personal nature of the attacks and the targeting of Misri’s family. They highlighted the need for respectful discourse and criticised the doxxing and abuse.

Sherbir Panag (@Sherbir) condemned the trend, saying, “We fail as a nation not because of ceasefires but when our only response is to abuse women. Look at the absolute garbage (in the comments) we are throwing at Mr Misri and his family. Disgusting.”

Another user, Jayati (@Jayati_M93), pointed out a deeper issue: “Sanghis have found another woman to blame, this time Vikram Misri’s daughter. Also, it’s funny how they expect people to believe that it’s babus to blame for the current approach and not the political leadership.”

Misri is a highly experienced diplomat who has served India in various high-level roles, including ambassador to China, Spain, and Myanmar, Foreign Secretary since July 2024, Private Secretary to three Prime Ministers: Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi.

Born in Srinagar and educated at Hindu College and XLRI Jamshedpur, Misri is one of India’s most experienced diplomats. His recent involvement in managing the India-Pakistan military tensions has placed him in the spotlight.

The doxxing and abuse of the foreign secretary highlight the growing trend of personal attacks on public figures in the country. The incident raises concerns about online safety, the blurring of personal and public boundaries, and the need for respectful discourse in public life.
