NEW DELHI – Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) has demanded an immediate halt to anti-Muslim violence in Tripura. The Welfare Party of India, on the other hand, strongly condemned the communal violence in Tripura and asked the state government to take strict action against the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Madani has written a letter to Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb expressing deep concern over concerted attacks on Muslims, their religious places and houses. He has also drawn the chief minister’s attention to the provocative slogans being raised against Muslims in his state.

“Kindly take notice of the grim situation that is allowing anti-social elements mocking the law and order of the state. We expect you as the Chief Minister of the State to protect the life and property of the Muslim community and clamp down on the miscreants who are bent upon disrupting the law and order of the region.” Maulana Madani writes in the letter.

Several mosques, houses and shops belonging to Muslims were vandalised by Hindutva groups RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal across Tripura during protests against Bangladesh violence during the last few days. Photos and videos show violent right-wing mobs who wear saffron and carry swords raising anti-Muslim slogans during protests organised by Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Hindu Jagran Manch, Bajrang Dal, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

There has been anti-Muslim violence in Unakoti, West Tripura, Sepahijala and Gomati Tripura districts including incidents of vandalising mosques, stone-pelting and ransacking of homes and forcing hawkers to leave.

“We demand immediate halt to anti-Muslim Vigilante Violence in Tripura. The situation in Tripura is deteriorating fast, multiple reports of mosques being burnt and vandalism of Muslim houses and property. It seems the VHP crowds that were protesting against anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh are turning to violence against Muslims in Tripura,” said SIO’s National President Mohammad Salman Ahmad.

A delegation of SIO and Association of Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) submitted a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police (SP) and District Magistrate (DM) of Unakoti district and discussed details about attacks on Muslims establishments across Tripura. The delegation appealed for peace and arrest of miscreants. The SP gave assurance that he will take necessary steps. The DM said he will organise two peace meetings at Kailashahar and Kumarghat.

“The chief minister and state administration seems to be completely ignoring this outbreak, even as they appease the Hindutva forces with incendiary statements. We demand immediate state action to halt the violence and swift action against the perpetrators”, said Salman Ahmad.

Welfare Party’s National President Dr SQR Ilyas said Tripura violence is an attack on the secular fabric of the country, where the right-wing groups across the northeast state reportedly vandalized at least six mosques and over a dozen of houses and shops belonging to the Muslim minority community.

He said his party in its press statement dated 18th October 2021, had strongly condemned the communal violence in Bangladesh and had appealed back home to maintain peace and harmony. He said, unity and diversity is India’s pride and identity and any disturbance from any groups or individuals will damage the federal structure of India. It should be strongly condemned, he added.

Dr Ilyas said equal protection under the law for racial, ethnic, religious groups is a fundamental right, and communal violence is like a termite that will eat away our unity and shared values. “These events cast a terrible burden on our polity and citizenry. Undoubtedly, there is a need for both preventive and reparative action,” he added.

Maulana Madani on his part urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to condemn the Tripura attacks and direct the agencies concerned to take action against the organizations and groups involved. He said that any kind of attack on minorities in Tripura as retaliation to attacks on temples and puja pandals in Bangladesh must be condemned. “What happened in Bangladesh is widely condemned by all sections of the world. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh clearly announced the action against the perpetrators. We expect the Indian government will come forward to condemn the retaliation in the same way as it will send a strong message to hate-mongers,” Maulana Madani said.
