WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation in the United States, on Thursday welcomed two reports by Amnesty International detailing the destruction of Muslim properties in India and demanding an end to them.

Amnesty International has called on Indian authorities to immediately stop the “unlawful” bulldozing of Muslim properties, releasing two new reports describing the targeting of Muslim homes, businesses and places of worship across several Indian states. Amnesty International also called on the machinery producer JCB to condemn the use of its bulldozers to destroy Muslim properties and displace Muslims from their homes.

In a statement, CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw said: “India’s government is enabling the destruction of Muslim properties and the displacement of Muslims from their homes. The United States and the nations of the world should take action to hold this government to account. We urge the State Department to declare India a country of particular concern due to the ongoing persecution of Muslims, Christians and other minority religious groups. We thank Amnesty International for shedding light on these abuses of the rights of Muslims in India.”

He noted that in December, CAIR reiterated its longstanding appeal to the Joe Biden administration, echoing the recent statement by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), urging the immediate designation of India as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC).
