MUMBAI —A 21-year-old engineering student was held in Bengaluru in a raid by a Mumbai Police team in connection with the “Bulli Bai” application case on Monday.

The student is being brought to Mumbai, but the police didn’t divulge more information except his age. The arrested student was one of the followers of Bulli Bai app which led the police to him.

Earlier in the day, Mumbai Police had also filed a first information report (FIR) against unknown persons based on complaints that doctored photographs of women were uploaded for auction on ‘Bulli Bai’ application hosted by GitHub platform.

A shocking incident of harassment and insulting women of the minority community on social media came to light on January 1 on a mobile application named ‘Bulli Bai’ created on GitHub platform which posted the photos of a number of Muslim women including journalists, social workers, students and famous personalities which sparked an outrage.

This is the second attempt on Github platform to denigrate Muslim women six months after derogatory “Sulli Deals” mobile app targeting a particular community.

Both names are derogatory terms for women of the particular religion.

Though after the outrage, Github had removed the user from its hosting platform. But by then, Bulli Bai had sparked a nationwide controversy.

The app was also being promoted by a twitter handle with the name @bullibai, with the display picture was of a Khalistani supporter.

This twitter handle was endorsing the Bulli Bai app saying the women can be booked from the app. This handle was also promoting Khalistani content at the same time.

Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha member Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote to Mumbai Police after which the case was lodged.

On Sunday, West Mumbai Cyber Police station registered a case against the ‘Bulli Bai’ app developers and Twitter handles that promoted the app.

The Delhi Police had registered an FIR on Sunday against unidentified people that are involved in harassing and insulting women of the minority community on social media.

Delhi Police also sought information from social media giant Twitter about the account that first tweeted about the ‘Bulli Bai’ app and asked it to remove the offensive content.
