KOLKATA – A criminal lawyer here has lodged an FIR against Nazia Elahi Khan, a prominent BJP member, for her alleged blasphemous statements against Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the Muslim community. In her FIR, Noor Mahvish accuses Khan of making inflammatory remarks which could incite communal violence and deepen religious tensions in the country.
Mahvish expressed deep offense at Khan’s statements, describing them as “deeply offensive and inaccurate.” She also emphasised that such generalisations promote harmful stereotypes and urged that the law take necessary action to prevent hate speech and maintain communal harmony, a report in The Observer Post said on Wednesday.
In a video interview with the News Gallery earlier this month, Nazia Khan made several derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the holy city of Madinah. In the video, which was later shared on Khan’s X account, she allegedly referred to the Prophet (pbuh) using deeply disrespectful language.
The FIR outlines that these comments were made with the intent to incite hatred between different religious communities, particularly targeting Muslims. The complainant also highlighted that this was not the first time that the accused has made such provocative statements, pointing to a pattern of behaviour in her social media posts, which consistently exhibit a hateful stance toward the Muslim community.
The FIR also references a tweet by Nazia Khan on August 3, where she allegedly targeted Muslim women, suggesting they are treated as objects and that Muslim men only focus on having more children. Mahvish noted that such remarks not only misrepresent the Muslim community but also disrespect the diverse experiences within it.
The case filed against Nazia Khan cites multiple sections of the BNS including Section 299, which relates to deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, and Sections 362 and 353, for insulting religious figures and spreading misinformation through electronic means.
