KOLKATA — A politically charged atmosphere has gripped West Bengal ahead of the upcoming 2026 assembly elections after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari made a controversial statement about Muslim MLAs in the state.

Adhikari’s remarks have drawn widespread condemnation, triggering a strong reaction from Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, particularly from Muslim MLA Humayun Kabir, who has vowed to take drastic action if Muslim lawmakers are attacked.

Adhikari, speaking at a rally on Tuesday, claimed that if the BJP comes to power in 2026, Muslim MLAs elected under the Trinamool Congress banner would be “thrown out of the assembly.” His inflammatory remarks have been labelled as “hate-mongering” by his political adversaries, sparking fierce debate across Bengal’s political landscape.

In response, Humayun Kabir, a TMC MLA from Murshidabad, has issued a direct threat to Adhikari. “If anyone dares to raise their hands on Muslim MLAs, we will break them,” Kabir told the media, referring to the BJP leader’s provocative statement. He further accused Adhikari of lacking the courage to face the consequences of his words.

“We will not allow such hateful rhetoric to thrive in West Bengal. This is not just about politics; it’s about protecting our dignity and rights,” Kabir added.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh also condemned Adhikari’s statement, accusing him of using “provocative language” that is unbecoming of an elected representative. “It is unacceptable for a public figure to engage in such hate-mongering,” Ghosh said, calling for a closer examination of Adhikari’s mental state.

Humayun Kabir, who has often been in the headlines for his controversial statements, previously stoked tensions during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, warning of violent repercussions in the Murshidabad region if religious tensions were sparked. In the past, Kabir had boldly claimed that Muslims would not remain silent if attempts were made to create communal unrest in the region.

Amidst the political turmoil, Adhikari has reiterated his concerns regarding security. He revealed that the assembly speaker had barred his central security forces from entering the legislative premises, adding that any harm that befalls him should be attributed to the speaker and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “If anything happens to me, they will be responsible,” he stated, raising the stakes of this ongoing political drama.

The 2026 elections draw nearer, the rhetoric surrounding religious tensions, political security, and communal divides continues to escalate. Adhikari’s controversial statement and the subsequent threat from Humayun Kabir highlight the deepening fault lines in Bengal’s political and social landscape, particularly as both parties prepare for what is expected to be a hard-fought electoral battle.
