BJP Leader Assaults Visually Impaired Woman at Church in MP; Video Surfaces

Date:

JABALPUR — A video of a BJP leader in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur has gone viral in which the leader is seen harassing a visually impaired woman and making comments about the woman’s disability.

The incident that occurred on Saturday at a church in the Hawa Bagh area, which falls under the Gorakhpur police station limits has triggered widespread backlash, reported The New Indian Express.

In the video Anju Bhargava, vice president of the BJP’s Jabalpur city unit, can be seen confronting the woman in the presence of a police officer, shouting at her, twisting her arm and grabbing her face. The woman can be heard asking Bhargava to speak to her instead of assaulting her.

Bhargava is further heard saying the woman “will be blind in her next birth too”.

As per reports Bhargava, along with members of several Hindutva organisations, had entered the church, accusing organisers of forcing visually impaired children to convert their religion.

Police officials told TNIE that the event had been organised by Christian groups as part of Christmas celebrations, and that visually impaired students from a government-run hostel had been invited for lunch and a prayer meeting.

An unnamed police officer cited in media reports states that there was no evidence to support claims of forced religious conversion. The students also denied that any religious conversions took place.

The incident drew criticism from opposition leaders demanding accountability and action against those involved.

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate shared the footage on social media, saying “cruelty is the easiest way to advance in the BJP”.

“These people are stains on society,” Shrinate said, referring to Bhargava.
