RANCHI: Even though members of Hindutva outfits have been often found involved directly or indirectly in a number of lynching cases in BJP-ruled states in the last four years, it is perhaps first time that a Member of Parliament from the saffron party has publicly announced to pay the legal bill for the accused of a lynching.

Two Muslim men in early thirties were lynched by a mob on suspicion of stealing cattle in Godda district of Jharkhand on 13th June. The incident occurred in the Dhulu village under the Dev Tand Police station of the district. According to the police, the villagers caught hold of the two victims – Sirabuddin Ansari (35) and Murtaza Ansari (30) – and accused them of stealing 13 buffaloes from one Munshi Murmu on 12th June. The mob beat them so mercilessly that they died on the spot. The victims are said to be from the Banjhi Taaljhari village under the Podaiyahat police station of the district. Four persons were arrested for the lynching. They were identified as Munshi Murmu, alleged owner of the cattle, and Kaleshwar Soren, Kishan Tudu and Harjohan Kisku.

Now BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Godda, Nishikant Dubey has said he will pay for the legal expenses of the four men. The MP called it a “personal decision” since he believes the four men were being unfairly targeted for the mob lynching.

“The entire village was involved in the beating. Why are these four people being singled out just because their cattle was stolen?” Dubey told NDTV.

After the 13th June lynching, he had condemned the killing but added that stealing of cattle of farmers is also a big problem.

“Murder is an inhuman act and it is condemnable in a civilized society, but to steal cattle of poor farmers and smuggle them to Bangladesh is also a big problem of Jharkhand,” the PM had tweeted.

In March this year, a fast-track court in Ramgarh district of the state awarded life sentence to 11 people including a local BJP leader for lynching meat trader Alimuddin Ansari in June 2017.

The BJP-ruled Jharkhand has earned notoriety in the last couple of years for lynching over suspicion of beef, cattle theft or child lifting. More than a dozen people, mostly from the minority community, have been lynched in the state.

In April, a court in Bokaro district awarded life sentence to 10 persons for lynching one Shamsuddin Ansari in April last year over suspicion of child lifting.

In Latehar district, two Muslims, including a minor, were lynched and their bodies were hanged to a tree in March 2016. They were carrying their cattle to a village market place. The case is in pending in the court.

Jharkhand is going to Assembly polls next year.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Dubey had won the seat by polling 380314 votes while his nearest rival and senior Congress leader Furqan Ansari had got 319739 votes. At No. 2 was Jharkhand Vikas Morcha candidate Pradip Yadav with 193458 votes.
