AHMEDABAD — Just couple of weeks before the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections, there is bad news for the ruling BJP and its mentor RSS. Their student wing, ABVP has been wiped out from Gujarat Central University. All candidates of ABVP lost the elections for Students Council at the university in its state capital, Gandhinagar.

With ABVP’s main rival student groups like NSUI and BAPSA had boycotted the poll alleging irregularities in the election process, the student community voted for independent candidates, which lead to the defeat of all ABVP candidates.

The Central University of Gujarat does not have a students’ union but a Students Council, which has one student representative from all departments.

Barring some news portals, the news of ABVP’s defeat has been majorly ignored by the mainstream media.

According to headline24hindi.com, the School of Social Sciences, the largest department of the university, has elected independent candidate, Dileep Kumar, while from the School of International Studies also, independent candidate Arvind has won. Other independent winners from other departments include Arjun Patel and Vipin Singh.

In the last two months, ABVP has lost student union elections at Allahabad University and Kashi Vidyapeeth in Uttar Pradesh where BJP is in power, besides JNU and Delhi University in Delhi.

Gujarat is going to elect its new 182-member Assembly in two phases, for which Gujaratis will be polling on December 9 and 14, respectively. BJP, which is in power, in the state for about a quarter century, is said to be facing its toughest fight.
