The Congress leader says nobody felt safe in the state as criminals were having a free run

NEW DELHI — The Congress has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar, stating that criminals had no fear of the law and were roaming around freely.

The party also pointed out that the education system in the state had completely collapsed under the JDU-BJP regime, and now was the time to change the regime.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here on Tuesday, senior party leader and CWC member Dr Kanhaiya Kumar said that nobody was feeling safe in the state as criminals were having a free run.

Taking a dig at the Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha for saying that organised crime had been eliminated in the state, Kanhaiya Kumar said all those involved in organised crime had assumed political power and were now operating through the sharpshooters who were extorting money from the people. He observed that this was not the way Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar used to run the government. “It is actually the BJP that is running the show in Bihar now”, he said.

Kumar also raised concerns over the deteriorating education system in Bihar. He said that the place renowned for Nalanda University and where Gautam Buddha achieved enlightenment, has now suffered a serious decline in the field of education. He disclosed that the principals of the colleges were now being appointed through a lottery system. He quoted the vice chancellor of a university as saying that with so many claimants for postings in the urban areas, only the lottery system was the way out. How would the education system work in Bihar under such circumstances, he wondered.

Citing an example, he said that the graduation degree that takes three years everywhere in the country takes five years in Bihar.

He also pointed out the lack of basic infrastructure in the colleges and universities of Bihar. He asserted that the universities had become centres of loot and corruption only.

Kumar disclosed that there are some colleges, with just four rooms, where thousands of students have been enrolled. He said, the purpose is just to make money and dole out certificates.

The Congress leader also paid homage to two students who passed away recently. One was the student of an Odisha college who succumbed to her injuries after self-immolating when the authorities failed to act on her sexual harassment complaints. The other was a girl student whose body was found in New Delhi recently.
