PATNA — A 25-year-old Muslim youth was severely thrashed by the Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel at Janakpur Road Railway Station in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district on Thursday.
The assault was so brutal that an intestine of the victim popped out from his stomach after it was cut open.
The incident happened when the victim, Mohammed Furqan, was at the railway station to drop off his aunt who was travelling to Mumbai. The GRP personnel brutally beat Furqan with sticks after he had an altercation with a passenger on a berth.
Furqan said the policemen repeatedly hit him with stick at the abdomen area which had undergone a surgery recently. The victim’s repeated pleas not to him on that particular abdomen area fell on deaf ears and the policemen continued to thrash him mercilessly.
Furqan had undergone intestinal surgery about two years ago. Due to the stick injury on the operated area, his stomach burst open on the left side and an intestine popped out.
A video of Furqan’s intestine coming out of his stomach has gone viral triggering an outrage on social media. There is also a video of police personnel beating him.
Angered by the GRP personnel’s barbaric behaviour, the people present at the station vandalised Janakpur Road station.
According to reports, angry passengers broke the iron grill and glass gate of the main entrance of the station superintendent’s office, entered inside, and created a ruckus. In the scuffle, some government employees sustained injuries.
In a statement, SP (Railway) Muzaffarpur said the the incident started when the police personnel attempted to resolve a dispute between two passengers over a berth. The stitches on Furqan’s surgical wounds were ripped open as he was shoved and pushed by the police personnel.
“Furqan is under treatment. He is out of danger now. We have taken his statement. According to him, the reason behind the incident is scuffle between two groups. Later, the GRP also used force against him,” said the SP.
Two policemen, Gyanendra Paswan and Gorelal Chaudhry, have been temporarily suspended. A probe has been ordered to look into all issues related to the incident. Appropriate action will be taken after the investigation is completed, he said.
