BHOPAL: The Congress party has alleged that the director of a private hostel who was arrested last week for raping and torturing hearing and speech impaired women is activist of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and close to leaders of its political front BJP.

Ashwini Sharma was arrested on Wednesday night under various criminal charges including rape, intimidation, wrongful confinement and a law to prevent atrocities against Dalits.

The horror at the Bhopal hostel, which came close on the heels of similar revelations at girls’ shelter homes in Muzaffarpur (Bihar) and Deoria (Uttar Pradesh), was unraveled after a hearing and speech impaired 20-year-old girl filed a complaint. Within couple of days, two other inmates of the hostel came out and filed similar complaint against Sharma.

Now a fourth woman, 23, has come forward and accused Sharma of keeping her in captivity and raping her regularly for six months.

“I was kept in custody, made to watch porn films and was raped for six months,” the fourth survivor has reportedly told the police in Indore. She also alleged that she was brutally assaulted when she refused to give in to Sharma’s demands.

The Congress has alleged that Ashwini Sharma – much like Bihar’s child rape accused Brajesh Thakur – is close to the leaders of the ruling BJP.

“Ashwini Sharma is an activist of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and he enjoys the blessings of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan,” NDTV has quoted state Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza as saying while releasing a video to substantiate her charges.

In the video, Sharma is seen standing close to Chouhan and touching his feet.

However, BJP spokesperson Rahul Kothari has denied the allegation. “The Congress is just playing politics in such a sensitive matter, the accused is arrested and investigations are on,” he said.

In Muzaffarpur of Bihar, Brajesh Thakur, owner of a state-funded shelter home, was arrested last month in connection with mass rape of at least 34 minor girls at the shelter.

In Deoria of Uttar Pradesh, a minor escapee from an illegal shelter home told the police that cars of different colors would come at the shelter home in the evening for girls and they were dropped in the morning. Police conducted a raid and rescued 19 girls.
