AURANGABAD – In a proud moment for Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Syeda Anjum has been selected as an official for the Hockey India West Zone Championship, set to be held in Gujarat from July 23 to 30. Anjum’s selection marks a historic first, as she becomes the city’s first female player to be appointed to such a role.
Anjum’s family expressed immense happiness upon hearing the news. “We are overjoyed and proud of Syeda’s achievement,” said a family member. Anjum herself is determined to bring dedication and passion to her new role. “I will perform my duties with great diligence and interest, and I aim to remain actively involved in the future.”
Hockey Maharashtra official Pankaj Bhar Sakde praised Anjum’s appointment, as did Aurangabad Hockey President Shikan Joshi, who congratulated her on this significant accomplishment.
Anjum has a solid background in hockey officiating, having completed the Hockey India Match Officials Education and Development Plan State Level Course West Zone Qualification and Education in Pune earlier this year. Her technical expertise has earned her a place among the 20 officials selected by Hockey India to manage the tournament’s technical aspects.
Reflecting on her journey, Anjum said, “I was earlier selected for the Chhattisgarh Hockey Official role, but due to family concerns, I couldn’t take it up. Now, with my family’s support, I’m ready to take on this new challenge in Gujarat.”
Anjum’s passion for hockey was inspired by her sister during her time at Deogiri College, where she studied in Urdu medium and later represented Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University’s hockey team multiple times.
In a message to aspiring young athletes, especially Muslim girls, Anjum said, “If a person has the desire to achieve something and works tirelessly, success is inevitable. I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams in sports.”
