NEW DELHI — A Hindu youth from Bihar’s Purnia assumed a Muslim name and threatened a bomb attack on Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj with Congress calling it an “attempt to spread hatred” against a community.

The Uttar Pradesh Police arrested Ayush Kumar Jaiswal on Saturday after tracing the threat to his actions. The arrest comes after the bomb threat was posted on social media, claiming that a bombing during the Maha Kumbh would kill 1,000 people. The threat was made under the fake identity of ‘Nasir Pathan’ on Instagram. According to the police, Jaiswal created this fraudulent profile to frame his neighbour, Nasir Pathan.

Addressing Hindus with abusive words, the threat message posted on Instagram reads: “All of you will be killed, In sha Allah. Are you people coming to Kumbh Mela? Such blast will take place that at least 1,000 will be killed. Allah Hu Akbar”.

In the message, the accused also gave his Purnia address and dared anyone to take any action against him. The police tracked him down by tracing his IP address.

Jaiswal, a Class XII student, was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police in collaboration with Bhawanipur Police during a raid at Shaheedganj Panchayat. The online threat was made on December 31.

Jaiswal has been identified as a person with a dangerous mindset. “We are looking into his connections and the motives behind his actions,” Bhawanipur Police Station in-charge Sunil Kumar was quoted by media reports as saying.

The Maha Kumbh police acted swiftly after the threat went viral, launching an investigation against an unknown individual. Using IP address tracking, they were able to pinpoint the identity of the person behind the threat. The investigation led to the formation of three police teams to apprehend the suspect.

After the case gained widespread attention, it was discovered that Jaiswal had fled to Nepal. However, upon his return to Bihar, the police were able to arrest him.

Following his arrest, Jaiswal was brought to Prayagraj for further questioning.

According to police sources, Jaiswal’s threat was a calculated attempt to create suspicion around Pathan, and the police are now investigating the full scope of Jaiswal’s actions. Authorities are likely to take further action based on the information gathered during Jaiswal’s interrogation.

The incident has triggered an outrage with political leaders noting that such attempts are being made to spread hatred against the Muslim community.

Congress’ Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi said such planning is done to spread hatred against a particular community.

“Ayush Jaiswal” of Purnia, Bihar created a fake ID to threaten to bomb the Prayag Mahakumbh. Ayush created an Instagram ID in the name of Nassar Pathan and posted these objectionable things, a big conspiracy was hatched, TV channels across the country ran big stories. Now when the police have arrested Ayush and revealed the truth, everyone is silent. Just imagine how much planning is done to spread hatred against a community in the country,” wrote Pratapgarhi on X.

Similarly, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate also said that such incidents take place due to hatred.

“A person named Nasir Pathan wrote on Instagram “We will blast in Kumbh and kill 1,000 people”. Then UP police arrested that ignorant person from Purnia, Bihar. What is this?! The person who threatened by creating a fake ID in the name of Nasir Pathan turned out to be Ayush Jaiswal. How much hatred has spread in the country,” she said.
