Anti-CAA Protesters Manhandled, Detained from Delhi’s Turkman Gate

NEW DELHI – Students and civilians, who were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and Police brutality at the Jamia Millia Islamia on December 15, were forcibly detained and manhandled by the Delhi Police on Thursday from the Turkman Gate area.

All detainees are at Rajinder Nagar Police Station Where they have been offered food and are likely to be released by 4 pm.

The students alleged that their phones were snatched and the police have manhandled them. “All the detainees are at the Rajinder Nagar Police Station as of now. They have been given something to eat at the station and are likely to be released by 4 pm,” Advocate Tanvi Sharma, part of the legal aid team that rushed to the police stations, was quoted by edexlive.com as saying.

There were reports that around 30 students had been detained but Tanvi said that only 10 people have been detained and only a few among them are students.

“There has been no confirmation about detainees being taken to any other police station. No detainee is at Srinivaspuri police station as well,” she added.

The students of Jamia and some civilians had started protesting at Turkman Gate at 3 pm on January 15 and were there till around 7 am the next morning. “We had just left from the protest site when the police crackdown happened. In a matter of just 15 minutes. They took away phones from the students and protestors of all ages and then dragged them on to busses,” said Ghulam Hasan, an ex-student of Jamia.

“There were some students of Delhi University who perform nukkad nataks and some civilians as well who had come to protest in support of the cause,” he added.
