Since words fail, we give you a Faiz poem, sung by Iqbal Bano, with a rough, inadequate translation:
aaiye haath uThaayeN ham bhii
ham jinheN rasm-e-du’aa yaad nahiiN
ham jinheN soz-e-muhabbat ke sivaa
ko’ii but, ko’ii Khudaa yaad nahiiNaaiye arz guzaareN ke nigaar-e-hastii
zehr-e-imroz meN shiiriini-e-fardaa bhar de
voh jinheN taab-garaaN-baarii-e-ayyaam nahiiN
un ki palkoN pe shab-o-roz ko halkaa kar dejin kii aaNkhoN ko rukh-e-subh ka yaaraa bhii nahiiN

जब तक आप ये तहरीर पढ़ें गे जनाज़े उठ चुके हूं गे। प्राइमरी सेक्शन के बच्चों के लिए छोटे कफ़न, हाई स्कूल के लिए नार्मल साइज़ के।
By the time you read this, the funeral procession would be over. Small-sized coffins for the primary section; normal size for high school.
क़ब्रों पर पानी छिड़कने के बाद फूल चुड़ािऐ जउच्चके हूं गे। माएं इन बच्चों की तस्वीरों को चूम कर बे बेहाल हूं गी जिन्हें उन्हों ने सुबह सब्ज़ कोट में, या सब्ज़ जरसी में और लड़कीयों को सब्ज़ चादर पहना कर स्कूल भेजा था और अब जिन्हें दफ़नाने के बाद मर्द लोग क़ब्रिस्तानओ-ं से वापिस आराऐ हैं।
Water would have been sprinkled on the graves, flowers would have been gathered. Mothers would be inconsolable after kissing the photographs of children whom they would have sent to school in green coats, green jerseys and green shawls in the morning, after burying whom the menfolk would be returning…
सर्द मौसम में माओं को वैसे भी बच्चों की पढ़ाई से ज़्यादा ये फ़िक्र होती है कि उन्हें ठंड ना लग जाए। इन बच्चों को शहीद कहा जा रहा होगा। शहीद सीधे जन्नत में जाते हैं तो ये किह कर दिलों को तसल्ली दे लेते हैं कि पिशावर की सर्दी इन बच्चों की क़ब्रों के इन्दर नहीं पहुंचे गी।
In cold weather, mothers in any case are more concerned about their children catching a chill rather than their education. Perhaps they would be calling these children martyrs. Martyrs go directly to heaven, so perhaps we can console our hearts by saying the Peshawar cold will not reach inside these graves.
पिशावर में एक इन्तिहाई अहम और हंगामी इजलास भी हो चुका होगा जिस में इन्तिहाई सख़्त अलफ़ाज़ में इस क़तल आम की मुज़म्मत की जाए गी।
In Peshawar, an extremely important and voluble meeting would have taken place where extremely strong words of condemnation would be used against these cold blooded murders.
शायद तालिबान का नाम लिया जाए या उन्हें क़ौम और मुल्क का दुश्मन जैसा तख़ल्लुस अता क्या जाए और उन्हें सफ़ाۂ हस्ती से मिटाने का अज़म दुहराया जाए। यक़ीनन इस इन्तिहाई अहम इजलास में इन्तिहाई अहम फ़ैसले किए जाएं गे लेकिन इजलास के आग़ाज़ में मरहू मीन के लिए दुआिऐ मग़फ़िरत पढ़ी जाए गी।
Perhaps the name of Taliban would be taken and they would be given sobriquets such as enemy of the nation. Resolutions to annihilate their very existence would be repeated. Certainly, in this extremely important gathering, extremely important decisions would be taken. And of course at the commencement of this meeting, prayers would be made for the souls of the departed.
मेरा ख़्याल है ये दुआ ग़ैर ज़रूरी है।
I think these prayers are unnecessary.
मैट्रिक करने वाले या मिडल स्कूल में पढ़ने वाले या प्राइमरी जमाअत के तालिब इल्म ने आख़िर क्या गुनाह क्या होगा कि इस की की बख़शिश के लिए दुआ मांगी जाए।
What sin could those studying for their matriculation, or in middle school, or in primary classes have committed that prayers be offered for it to be forgiven?
हो सकता है किसी ने कैंटीन वाले का बीस रुपये उधार देना हो, हो सकता है किसी ने अपने क्लास फ़ैलो को इम्तिहान में चुपके से नक़ल कराई हो। किसी ने हो सकता है क्रिकेट के मैच में अम़्पायर बन कर अपने दोस्त को आओट ना दिया हो, कोई किसी से एज़ी लोड ले कर मकर गया हो। हो सकता है किसी ने क्लास में खड़े हूकर उस्ताद की नक़ल उतारी हो, हो सकता है किसी शरीर बच्चे ने स्कूल के बाथ रुम में घुस कर अपना पहला सिगरेट पिया हो।
It is possible that someone owed the canteenwallah 20 Rupees. It is possible that someone may have allowed a classfellow to quiety cheat in the examination. It is possible that in a Cricket match, someone may have acted as the umpire and not given his friend out. It is possible that someone may have denied taking a soft loan from someone else. It is possible that someone may have mimicked the teacher in the class. It is possible that some errant child may have smoked his first cigarette in the bathroom.
ख़बरों में आया है कि जब सब्ज़ कोटों और सब्ज़ जरसीयों और सब्ज़ चादरों पर ख़ून के छींटे पड़े तो स्कूल में मैट्रिक की अलविदाई तक़रीब भी चल रही थी। इस तक़रीब में हो सकता है कि किसी ने कोई ग़ैर मुनासिब गाना गा दिया हो।
It has come out in news that when green coats and jerseys were being sprayed with blood drops, the school was also preparing to bid farewell to the matric students. It is possible that someone may have sung some inappropriate song there.
अगले हफ्ते से सरदीयों की छुट्टियां आने वाली हैं कई बच्चों ने अपने रिश्ता दारों के पास छुट्टियां गुज़ारने का प्रोग्राम बनाया हो गा जहां पर सारी रात फिल्में देखने या इंटरनैट पर चैट करने के मनसूबे हूं गे।
The winter vacation is about to commence from next week. Many kids must have planned to go visit their relatives. Or may have hoped for all-nighters watching films and chatting on the internet.
आख़िर सोला साल तक की उमर के बच्चे और बच्चीयां क्या गुनाह करसकते हैं जिस के लिए इस मुल्क की सयासी और असकरी क़यादत हाथ उठा कर दुआिऐ मग़फ़िरत करे?
After all, What possible crime could 16-year-old boys and girls have committed for which this country’s political and military leadership should raise their hands in prayer?
हो सकता है स्कूल में एक दोस्त ने दूसरे से वाअदा क्या हो कि छुट्टीयों के बाद मिलीं गे। अब इन में से एक वापिस नहीं आए गा क्यों कि वो पिशावर की मिट्टी में एक ऐसी सर्द क़ब्र में दफ़न है जो कि एक ऐसा क्लास रुम है जहां कोई क्लास फ़ैलो नहीं और जहां कभी छुट्टी की घंटी नहीं बजती।
It is possible that a friend may have promised another in the school to meet up after the vacation. One of them would now not return because he is now buried in a cold grave, which is such a classroom where there is no classfellow, and no bell ever rings out, signalling the class is over.
तो पाकिस्तान की सयासी और असकरी क़यादत से दरख़ास्त है कि वो इन बच्चों की आखिरत के बारे में परेशान ना हूं और जब कुल दुआ के लिए हाथ उठाईं तो अपनी मग़फ़िरत की दुआ मांगीं और दुआ के लिए इन हाथों को ग़ौर से देखें कि इन पर ख़ून के धब्बे तो नहीं।
Pakistan’s political and military leadership is requested not to worry about the afterlife of these children. When they raise their hands in prayer, they should pray for their own forgiveness, and they should look at their own hands carefully, that they are not stained with blood.
