ALIGARH — Ahead of the annual “Sir Syed Day” celebrations at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), scheduled for October 17, several students have appealed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatun to redirect the funds allocated for the event towards humanitarian aid for Palestine and Lebanon.
The students, particularly from Sir Syed Hall and RM Hall, have voiced their desire to see the celebration funds used for a more pressing cause. “AMU students stand in solidarity with Palestine. We want the funds meant for Sir Syed Day to be used to meet the basic needs and improve the livelihoods of citizens in Palestine. This act of compassion and aid is very much in line with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s legacy of service to humanity,” a student was quoted by Maktoob Media as saying.
Traditionally, Sir Syed Day is a significant event for the university, marking the birth anniversary of its founder who was also an esteemed reformer, philosopher, and educationist. The day is celebrated with grandeur and includes a variety of cultural and academic activities.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor Naima Khatun had announced that this year’s Sir Syed Day would be held on a grand scale, with all customary events taking place. However, the students’ call for redirecting funds has sparked a discussion within the university community about balancing tradition with urgent global humanitarian needs.
The final decision on whether the funds will be reallocated is yet to be made, but the proposal highlights the university’s students’ deep sense of social responsibility and empathy for global issues.
