AMU Offers Its Medical College & Hospital for Trial of COVID-19 Vaccine

ALIGARH— The Aligarh Muslim University has offered its Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College & Hospital to the government as a trial centre for COVID-19 vaccine. The college is among top 12 medical colleges in the country and its hospital registers around half a million patients in a year.

AMU has made the offer to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).

“AMU has offered ICMR & DBT to select JN Medical College Hospital as one of the trial centres for COVID-19 vaccine,” said AMU Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor in a tweet Thursday evening. He tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official Twitter handle @PMOIndia, President of India, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and HRD Ministry and its minister among others.

For the past four months, AMU has been conducting RT-PCR based testing for COVID-19 patients.

The VC also said that AMU has 1300-bedded tertiary care hospital with well-equipped ICU, CCU and NICU and has been managing both COVID & non-COVID patients. It has L2 COVID Hospital status.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College established in 1962 was ranked among 12 best medical colleges. It is part of the Aligarh Muslim University. The College has an intake of 150 MBBS and 146 postgraduate students and is successfully running undergraduate and post graduate programmes in almost all specialities as well as Diploma in Nursing and Para Medical Courses, says the website of the college.

The College is also running various programmes sponsored by UNICEF, WHO, National AIDS Control Organization, ICMR and Tuberculosis Control.

The hospital is a tertiary level hospital affiliated to the Aligarh Muslim University.
