HUBBALI — After the Hubbali Municipal Corporation on the request of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), gave permission to observe the birth anniversary of the Tiger of Mysore Tipu Sultan at the Eidgah Ground in Karnataka’s Hubballi, Hindu group Sri Rama Sena challenged the clearance by the civic body. Sena announced that they will not allow the celebration to take place.

The AIMIM and a few other organisations had approached the municipal corporation seeking permission to celebrate Tipu Jayanti at the Eidgah Maidan. The civic body announced it was accepting the AIMIM’s request on Wednesday. Tipu Jaynati is celebrated on November 10.

“The state government has already banned the celebration of Tipu Jayanti and how can the city corporation give permission,” asked Sri Rama Sena Founder Pramod Muthalik. He alleged that there were political calculations behind the move, reports IANS.

Pramod Muthalik further said that he was opposed to the celebration of Tipu Jayanti at Idgah Maidan. “Tipu Sultan was a religious fanatic. We will not let anyone celebrate his birth anniversary at any part of the state,” he maintained.

“We will not let the celebration happen. We will prevent it in any circumstance,” he reiterated.

However, Police detained a number of Sri Ram Sena workers as they attempted to stage a protest near the Idgah ground in Hubballi. The protest was organised to condemn the move of the local body to accord permission for celebrating Tipu Jayanti.

The Sri Ram Sena chief reportedly called Tipu Sultan as an enemy of Hindus and Kannada language.

Earlier in August, the Karnataka High Court had allowed Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations to go ahead at the ground, triggering a huge row.

“The decision of the Hubballi-Dharwad City Corporation to celebrate Tipu Jayanti iwas not correct. Sri Rama Sena condemns the move,” he reiterated.
