NEW DELHI – Questioning the conviction of Afzal Guru in the parliament attack case, Alia Bhatt’s mother and actress Soni Razdan said Guru was made scapegoat and there should be solid inquiry in his case.

The questions over the conviction of Guru raised after Kashmir DSP Davinder Singh, who tortured Guru, was held along with terrorists. In a letter to his lawyer, Guru had accused Jammu and Kashmir police officer Singh of torturing him and assigning him to fetch a parliament attack accused to Delhi.

“One day at 10 AM I was on my two wheeler scooter that I had purchased just before two months. I was whisked away by STF men in bullet proof gypsy to Paihallan camp. There the D.S.P. Vinay Gupta tortured me, electrified me — put me in cold water — used petrol-chillies and other techniques. He told me that I possess weapons but at evening time one of his inspector Farooq told me that if I can pay 1000,000 Rs. to him (DSP) I will be released or they will kill me,” said Guru in letter.

Referring to this letter,  Razadan tweeted, “This is a travesty of justice. Who is going to bring back a man from the dead if he is innocent. This is why the death penalty is not to be used lightly. And this is why there also needs to be a solid enquiry into why Afzal Guru was made the scapegoat.”

“No one is saying he is innocent. But if he was tortured and then ordered by his torturer to do what he did isn’t that what needed to be fully investigated ? Why did no one take his allegations about Devinder Singh seriously. That’s the travesty,” she further clarified her statement.

Guru’s conviction and death penalty has been questioned by many prominent people including Arundhati Roy since he was hanged.
