NEW DELHI — Subramanian Swamy, a senior BJP leader and economist, has stirred a controversy by calling for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign from public life. Swamy argued that Modi’s leadership had led to significant setbacks for the BJP, including a reduced seat count in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Commenting on the Gautam Adani bribery issue on Monday, Swamy said, “Modi must now resign from public life.”
Adani is currently facing charges of bribery and securities fraud in two separate cases brought by US authorities.
The senior BJP leader suggested that Modi should step aside voluntarily to prevent further damage to his reputation and the party’s prospects.
Taking to social platform X, Swamy wrote that “Modi must now resign from public life because of what material will come out in US courts from Adani & co will devastate Indian government’s reputation.”
According to media reports, Swamy also criticised Modi’s governance on multiple fronts, such as economic policies, unemployment, and handling of major national issues. He also suggested that the BJP should shift its focus towards nurturing younger leaders and rethinking its strategies to regain public confidence.
Swamy is known for his bold and frank criticism of political leaders even from the BJP.
Earlier ahead of the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Swamy wrote, “Modi is muscling into the Prana Prathishta Puja, when his PM status is a zero in the Puja, nor has he followed Bhagwan Ram in his personal life especially in his behaviour to his wife, nor he has acted as per Ram Rajya as PM during the last decade.”
On the China imbroglio, Swamy reacted strongly challenging Modi when the prime minister had given clean chit to China saying “koyi aaya nahin.”
Modi has betrayed Bharat Mata by saying ‘koyi aaya nahin..’ giving a clean chit to the Chinese who by now have grabbed 4065 sq kms of Ladakh land, he wrote in March.
