NEW DELHI — Scores of activists from  trade unions, rights organisations, women groups, student bodies and members of public on Friday assembled at Parliamentary Street in Delhi in solidarity with farmers who are protesting on highways  at different spots on Delhi’s  borders, demanding reversal of the new farm bills.

The marchers gathered near Bank of Baroda under the banner “Delhi for Farmers”. They marched down Parliamentary Street, raising slogans and displaying posters in support of farmers and against the Bills even as the police made vain attempts to disperse them.

The march reverberated with slogans of solidarity of people of Delhi with farmers: “Kisan-Mazdoor Ekta Zindabad” (“Hail the Unity of farmers and Labourers”) and “Repeal Famers Bill.”

The organisers said they had sought prior permission which was denied but they decided to take out the march. They were stopped by the police at the barricade at Jantar Mantar where they held their meeting and prominent personalities made speeches.

The gathering was addressed by Maimoona Abbas Mollah from All India Democratic Women’s Association, Dipti from National Federation of Indian Women Tuhin Deb from Trade Union Centre of India, among others.

The speakers spoke in support of the struggle that farmers are waging at Delhi’s borders against the policies of the Modi government. They said the struggle “will continue until justice is served”.

The activists appealed to the citizens of Delhi to join the struggle and stand in solidarity with the protesting farmers. The protesters later dispersed peacefully.

The farmers are protesting against The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.
