CHANDIGARH: An engineering student from Nepal has committed suicide at the hostel of a private college in Panchkula of Haryana. The deceased identified as Sabul Ansari (22) was student of civil engineering at the Shri Ram Mulkh College. He was allegedly slapped with hefty fine for arriving the college late. The local police, however, said there was no suicide note found on him.

“Sabul Ansari from Nepal, student of Sriram Mulkh College, Haryana, committed suicide in his hostel room after being slapped with a fine by the college administration for arriving few minutes late to the college,” said NSUI (National Students Union of India) with hashtag #AnotherVemula on Wednesday.

According to The Tribune, the incident took place on Monday morning.

As the news about the suicide spread in the college, scores of students came out on the road and started protesting. But NSUI alleged that rather than taking action against the college, the local police filed cases against the protesting students under various sections of IPC.

“The suicide of Sabul Ansari invoked rage in his fellow classmates & friends who organized a protest outside the college and were charged under Sections 147, 149, 283, 427 of the IPC and Section 8B of the NH Act, which are non-bailable,” said NSUI and demanded withdrawal of the cases.

NSUI’s national president Fairoz Khan tweeted: “It has been observed that private colleges levy heavy fines on students for petty causes which burdens them financially.”

The hashtag #AnotherVemula is right now trending on Twitter in India.

In January 2016, Dalit PhD student Rohith Vemula had committed suicide at the University of Hyderabad. He was allegedly harassed by the college administration.
