‘Everything Went Dark, I Realised I Had Gone Blind,’ Says Freed Palestinian Detainee Abu Foul

Date:

GAZA — Disturbing testimonies have begun to surface from Palestinians released by Israel following the recent ceasefire, revealing accounts of brutal torture and inhumane treatment inside Israeli prisons.

Among them is Mahmoud Abu Foul, who says he lost his eyesight after being savagely beaten during an interrogation by Israeli intelligence officers.

“They asked me to confess to crimes I didn’t commit. When I refused, they struck me on the head until I lost consciousness,” Abu Foul told Al Jazeera.
“When I woke up, I tried to open my eyes but everything was black. That’s when I realised I had gone blind.”

According to Mustafa Barghouti, secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, Abu Foul endured torture and electric shocks during his detention.

Abu Foul, who had already lost a leg in an earlier Israeli attack on Gaza, said his suffering did not end there. He recounted that his spine and ribs were broken in beatings by interrogators and that he was denied urgently needed medical care and surgery, leaving his health in a critical condition.
