Critics condemn the BJP leader’s remarks as promoting violence and intolerance, while political leaders demand accountability.
BHOPAL – Former Member of Parliament from Bhopal and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pragya Singh Thakur has ignited a political firestorm with her recent remarks urging parents to physically punish their daughters who visit the homes of non-Hindus.
Her remarks at a religious event here this week suggesting that parents should “break the legs” of daughters who disobey and engage with individuals outside their faith, have sparked widespread outrage and condemnation. Thakur’s suggestion is a shocking display of misogyny and intolerance. Her call to punish erring daughters is not only a violation of human rights but also a recipe for violence and oppression.
In a video of the event that has since gone viral, Thakur is heard saying, “Strengthen your minds and make them firm enough that if our daughter does not obey us, if she goes to a non-Hindu’s house, leave no stone unturned in considering breaking her legs.” She further stated, “Those who do not follow values or listen to their parents must be punished. When parents act this way, it is for the good of their children—they save them from being cut into pieces.”
Civil rights organisations and women’s groups have condemned the remarks as promoting violence and intolerance. “This is a blatant call for violence against women and a direct attack on their autonomy,” said Ayesha Siddiqui, a women’s rights activist. “Such statements embolden perpetrators and create an atmosphere of fear and repression.”
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also expressed concern over Thakur’s remarks. “We have taken cognizance of the matter and will be issuing a notice to the concerned authorities,” said its chairperson Rekha Sharma. “Such statements are not only irresponsible but also illegal under Indian law,” she said
Congress spokesperson Bhupendra Gupta questioned the necessity of such rhetoric, highlighting the low number of convictions in alleged religious conversion cases in Madhya Pradesh.
Thakur’s history of controversial statements adds to the gravity of the situation. In the past, she has made remarks that have been widely criticised for their communal and divisive nature. Despite the backlash, she has remained unapologetic, asserting that her views are in line with traditional values and cultural preservation.
Political analysts suggest that Thakur’s latest comments could have far-reaching implications for the BJP, especially in the run-up to upcoming elections. “The party must distance itself from such divisive rhetoric to maintain its appeal among a diverse electorate,” said political analyst Ramesh Verma.
As the controversy continues to unfold, the public remains divided. While some support Thakur’s call for preserving cultural values, many others view her remarks as a dangerous incitement to violence and communal discord.
The incident underscores the ongoing debate in India over the balance between tradition and modernity, and the extent to which personal freedoms should be curtailed in the name of cultural preservation. It also highlights the challenges faced by women in asserting their autonomy in a society where traditional norms often clash with individual rights.
Thakur’s statement has not only sparked a national debate on women’s rights and parental authority but has also raised pertinent questions about the role of political leaders in shaping societal values and norms. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the BJP will address the controversy and what impact it will have on the party’s image and electoral prospects.
