Allegations of police entering homes, assaulting civilians, and carrying out arbitrary arrests surface

BAREILLY — A delegation from the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) on Saturday visited areas in Bareilly affected by recent police action. The team also visited the district court to explore ways and means to offer legal assistance to the victims of police action.

The delegation included senior lawyers, journalists, and human rights activists.

The team met with affected residents, local lawyers, and eyewitnesses to gather detailed information about the police conduct and arrest methods. Participants reported that after a peaceful protest, police entered homes, assaulted civilians, and carried out arbitrary arrests, acts that constitute serious violations of human rights.

APCR representatives assured the victims that the organisation would provide them with legal assistance and demand an impartial investigation into the incident. They further stated that, if necessary, the matter would be taken to the high court and the Supreme Court.

The delegation emphasised that expressing religious sentiments cannot be criminalised, and that the state must uphold its responsibility to protect citizens’ fundamental rights.

The delegation included APCR National Secretary Nadeem Khan, noted journalist and social activist Prashant Tandon, senior advocate at Allahabad High Court, and Mahfoozur Rahman Faizi, Advocates Mohammad Huzaifa, Zia Jelani, and Mushfiq Raza, and several other lawyers.
