NEW DELHI – Leaders from diverse faiths came together at Jamaat-e-Islami Hind headquarters here on Saturday for an interfaith dialogue on the growing moral decline in society. The event was held under the aegis of Dharmik Jan Morcha, an organisation dedicated to strengthen communal harmony and mutual trust among religious communities.
In his address, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Vice President and Dharmik Jan Morcha chief, Prof Salim Engineer, said that moving away from religion and spirituality was the root cause of moral degeneration. “It is the duty of religious leaders to work together to save the nation from moral and spiritual decay,” he stressed.
“We must continuously strive to raise our moral standards in the light of religious teachings,” he added.
Representatives of several religions called for unity and ethical living. Swami Sushil Goswami Maharaj of Sanatan Dharma said no religion teaches hatred and urged cooperation for the nation’s development.
“All of us living in this country are brothers. Everyone follows their own faith, but no religion teaches hatred. We must work together for the development of the nation,” Maharaj said.
Sikh speaker Gyani Mangal Singh highlighted the Guru Granth Sahib’s call for brotherhood and equality. He suggested that such programmes should be organised on a large scale to bring awareness among the people.
Father Norbert Hermann cited the Bible’s teaching of love for God and neighbour. He said: “Love God and love your neighbour – this is the teaching of the Bible. We must treat others in the same way as we want others to treat us.”
Other participants included Merzban Zariwala (Parsi), Sant Veer Singh Hatkari (Ravidas Samaj), Yeshi Funt Shok (Buddhism), Ezikel Malekar (Judaism), Sister Hussain (Brahma Kumaris), and Nilakshi Raj Khwa (Baháʼí faith).
The programme, coordinated by Waris Hussain, ended with a call to hold more such dialogues to promote understanding and harmony in society.
