The FIR cites charges of attempting to create discord in society, promoting pre-existing enmity, and deliberately undermining social unity
NEW DELHI — Controversial priest Yati Narsinghanand, the Mahant of Dasna Devi Temple in Uttar Pradesh, is once again at the centre of controversy following a recent FIR filed against him in Maharashtra for allegedly making offensive remarks against Prophet Muhammad.
The complaint was lodged by the head of the Social Democratic Party of India at the Mumbra Police Station. According to the FIR, Narsinghanand allegedly made derogatory comments about the Prophet during a programme held at Hindi Bhavan in Ghaziabad on 29 September last year. The remarks reportedly sparked outrage within the Muslim community.
The FIR cites charges of attempting to create discord in society, promoting pre-existing enmity, and deliberately undermining social unity. Local authorities in Mumbra have registered the case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code to ensure communal harmony is protected.
This is not the first time Narsinghanand has drawn attention for offensive remarks against Islam and Prophet Muhammad. In 2014, he was arrested after inflammatory comments led to widespread protests from the Muslim community. Demonstrations escalated on the streets, with protesters demanding strict action. Clashes between police and demonstrators were reported during that period.
Despite previous arrests and warnings, Narsinghanand has reportedly continued to make provocative statements. Muslim leaders have repeatedly condemned his remarks and urged law enforcement authorities to take firm action to prevent further communal tension.
A community spokesperson said, “Repeated offensive remarks against Prophet Muhammad hurt the sentiments of millions of Muslims. We demand that authorities act promptly to hold him accountable and prevent the spread of hatred in society.”
The filing of this FIR has reignited concerns among Muslims across the region. Many believe that unchecked statements of this nature could incite further unrest and deepen communal divides. Religious and community leaders have called for vigilance, urging the police to take decisive measures to ensure peace and protect the dignity of the Muslim community.
“The safety of the community and respect for our faith must be upheld. Such statements are not mere words; they disturb harmony and hurt religious sentiments,” said another Muslim community representative.
Authorities in Maharashtra have confirmed the registration of the FIR and said that investigation is underway. They emphasised that the rule of law will determine further action, including possible arrest, depending on the outcome of the inquiry.
The Muslim community and civil society groups are closely watching developments. The case underscores the ongoing need for sensitivity in public discourse regarding religious figures, particularly when remarks have the potential to incite communal disharmony.
