SIT to Probe Lynching of Muslim Youth in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon

The brutal killing of 20-year-old Suleman sparks anger among Muslims nationwide, with calls for justice and condemnation of mob violence

JALGAON – Anger is spreading across the country’s Muslim community after the death of 20-year-old Suleman Khan in what is being called a clear case of mob lynching.

The incident happened on the evening of 11 August, when Suleman was sitting in a café with a 17-year-old girl. According to eyewitness accounts, 10 to 15 men suddenly entered the café and began beating him mercilessly.

Witnesses say the attackers dragged Suleman out, took him 25 kilometres away, and continued to assault him. He was eventually taken to hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead. Reports say he died from severe head injuries.

Police Superintendent Dr Maheshwar Reddy told reporters on Thursday that the case is “sensitive” and will be investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). “The SIT will be formed in the next one or two days and the investigation will be done in the best possible manner,” he said.

So far, police have arrested eight suspects and are questioning them. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the attack was linked to Suleman’s meeting with a girl from another community or if it was due to any personal dispute.

The killing has drawn widespread anger online. Social media users have called it a cold-blooded lynching and demanded strong punishment for those involved. Many have questioned whether a Muslim’s life is unsafe if they are seen with someone from another religion.

Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi strongly criticised the Maharashtra government, saying, “Some people kidnapped Suleman from a café when he was sitting with a girl. They took him 25 kilometres away. When his parents tried to save him, they were also beaten. After this, Suleman died in hospital.”

He added, “There is talk that the girl was from another religion. If Suleman was talking to her, then the girl was also talking to him. Why is he alone to be blamed? If a Muslim man loves or marries a Hindu girl, it becomes a question of his life and death. Such mob lynchings are happening a lot in the country. Please take some steps to stop this.”

Many Muslim voices online have echoed this concern, arguing that the repeated targeting of Muslims in such incidents is a dangerous trend. “Is death now the punishment for love?” one user wrote.

Local Muslim groups in Jalgaon have demanded that the investigation be fast-tracked and that the case be tried in a special court to prevent delays. They have also urged that protection be given to witnesses and the victim’s family, fearing intimidation by the accused’s supporters.

The incident has once again raised questions about whether Muslims in India are safe from mob attacks, and if justice will be delivered when the attackers come from the majority community.
