The Congress MLA launches initiative to educate all communities about the crucial role of Muslim religious leaders in India’s independence, spreading a message of unity and brotherhood
NEW DELHI/BHOPAL — With Independence Day approaching, Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Arif Masood has taken a significant step to remind the nation of the often-overlooked sacrifices made by Muslim religious leaders during the country’s freedom struggle. His initiative aims to counter growing communal misunderstandings by bringing to light the contributions of Muslims in securing the country’s independence from British rule.
Addressing the media, Arif Masood said Muslim religious leaders played a vital role in the independence movement, and it is important that the new generation learns about their sacrifices. He emphasised that this message of love and unity is especially necessary in today’s tense environment, where communal harmony is under strain.
From August 12 onwards, Masood will personally engage with children and students across Bhopal, sharing stories of Muslim heroes who fought against colonial rule. This effort is designed to reach people of all ages and backgrounds at schools, colleges, and public places to ensure the legacy of these freedom fighters is remembered by all.
“History books often overlook the contributions of Muslims,” said Masood, “but their role was no less significant. It’s our duty to ensure that everyone understands that the freedom struggle was a collective effort that transcended religion.”
When asked about recent appeals by some Hindu groups urging Muslims not to celebrate the festival of Raksha Bandhan by tying Rakhi, Masood responded firmly: “People filled with hatred have failed in the past and will fail again. This country will continue to celebrate rakhi with love and brotherhood. I will personally get rakhi tied by my sisters this year.”
Masood’s initiative comes at a time when questions are being raised in some quarters about the patriotism of India’s largest minority community. His work aims to challenge these divisive narratives by showcasing the shared sacrifices that unite Indians of all faiths.
On a separate note, Masood was asked about the ongoing political discussions concerning the expansion of the municipal corporation board in Madhya Pradesh. He stated, “That is an internal matter of the BJP. I will not comment much on it.”
Residents of Bhopal and observers from across the state have welcomed Masood’s efforts. ‘This is a timely reminder of the unity that built our nation,’ said Fatima Khan, a local school teacher. ‘It is important for children to know the truth about all those who sacrificed for India’s freedom, not just a few.’
As the nation prepares to celebrate the 79th Independence Day, the stories of Muslim heroes and their dedication to the cause of freedom are finally being brought to the forefront, thanks to Arif Masood’s determined initiative — a message of hope for communal harmony in challenging times.
