UP: Stripping of Vendors Clear Form of Terrorism, Says SP Leader Hasan

The former MP supports the display of nameplates on shops along Kanwar Yatra but warns against communal division

MORADABAD — The recent disturbing incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, where Muslim shopkeepers were forcibly asked to strip to prove their identity, has triggered widespread anger. Former Samajwadi Party MP Dr ST Hasan sharply criticised Hindu organisations behind such acts, comparing their behaviour to terrorism and calling for immediate action to restore communal peace.

The incident is part of growing tensions amid the ongoing Kanwar Yatra pilgrimage, which has seen increased communal sensitivities. The BJP-led governments in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have ordered shops along the Kanwar Yatra routes to display nameplates indicating the owners’ names, sparking debate and controversy nationwide.

Dr Hasan voiced a nuanced position on this contentious order. While he supported transparency in business by endorsing nameplates on shops, he expressed deep concern that this could widen the gap between communities.

He said, “We do not need to hide our identity. If a Muslim does business by cheating, then it is a crime. Nameplates should be put, but this can increase the distance between people.”

Dr Hasan added, “Both Hindus and Muslims buy goods from each other’s shops, eat and drink together. This is mutual brotherhood, and it should be maintained.”

The former MP strongly condemned the violent acts linked to Hindu groups during the Kanwar Yatra, particularly in Muzaffarnagar. Dr Hasan said, “It is the administration’s job to ensure that the government’s orders are followed, not that 8-10 people stand up and start threatening the poor vendors.”Show original message

The Muzaffarnagar incident serves as a reminder of the dangers when intolerance and hatred take root. Communities must come together, leaders speak responsibly, and administrations act swiftly to protect all citizens equally.
