NEW DELHI – A group of concerned citizens will file a review petition challenging the Ayodhya verdict in the Supreme Court on the ground the judgement wrongly interpreted the case as a dispute between the Muslims and Hindus.

β€œIt was a dispute between self-styled organisations which have no empirical evidence,” the summary of a petition drafted by the group read.

The announcement about the plan was made by noted human rights activist Harash Mandar at a public meeting on the Ayodhya verdict held in the Constitutional Club in New Delhi on Friday. In framing the dispute as a Hindu vs Muslim row, the court has misconstrued the nature of legal dispute, the summary read.

It also said the place in Ayodhya where Lord Ram was born is a matter of dispute as to whether this place is the same as today’s town of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. β€œAnd even within today’s Ayodhya, there are multiple sites which residents claim are where Lord Ram was born.”

The draft petition also stressed there was no evidence to prove that the structure that was allegedly demolished to build the Babri Masjid was a temple. β€œThe judgement allows a discussion about the underlying structures. It contravenes the Constitutional premise that there are no grounds to set right the wrongs of history in the 21st Century,” the summary of the review plea said.

They will file the review petition on 7 December.
