‘Failing to Rape, He Urinated on My Face,’ Dalit Woman Alleges Caste Violence in UP

The police have registered a case and assured strict action against the accused

NEW DELHI — A disturbing incident of caste violence has been reported in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district where a Dalit woman alleged that a local upper-caste man attempted to outrage her modesty and urinated on her face when he failed to rape her.

The woman, who was alone at home, claims that Abhinav, a resident of the same village, entered her home and tried to force himself on her. When she resisted, he allegedly used casteist slurs, threatened to kill her, and urinated on her face.

According to the woman, Abhinav entered her home between 6 to 7 pm. Her husband works in Surat, while her in-laws were away on the evening of the incident on 10 June.

“He forced himself inside and started touching me inappropriately. When I resisted, he tried to shut my mouth and tear my clothes,” the woman said in her police complaint, reports reaching here on Monday said.

She said that when she tried to resist and escape from Abhinav’s clutches, he threatened to throw her two-month-old baby on the ground. In her attempt to protect the child, the woman was injured.

“When he couldn’t succeed in raping me, he got angry. He urinated on my face, insulted my caste, and said he would kill me if I told anyone”, the victim said in her complaint.

The woman informed her in-laws when they returned later that evening and then went to the police station to file a complaint. She also expressed apprehension that her life was in danger.

Station House Officer Ankit Tripathi confirmed the incident. “A case has been registered based on the victim’s statement, and we are conducting a thorough investigation. We will take strict action against the accused as per the law,” he said.

This brutal attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of women, especially those from marginalised communities, in rural areas. Local Dalit activists have demanded immediate arrest and strict punishment for the accused, emphasising that this incident is not just violence against a woman but also an attack on her dignity and caste.

This incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced protection and support for Dalit women and marginalised communities facing multiple forms of oppression. It also underscores the importance of addressing caste-based violence and ensuring accountability for perpetrators.
