Modi Govt Accused of Complicity in Israel’s Genocidal War on Gaza

CPI(M) blasts Modi govt’s foreign policy, security failures, and economic inequality and calls for immediate severing of military ties with Israel

NEW DELHI – In a scathing political charge-sheet against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has accused the Narendra Modi-led government of complicity in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza and intensifying efforts to divide Indian society along communal lines. It vehemently demanded that the government immediately stop the export of arms and cut military and security ties with Israel.

Concluding its three-day (June 3-5) Central Committee meeting in the national capital, the CPI(M) also announced a mass political campaign to expose what it termed as the authoritarian and opportunistic role of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), both during the Emergency era and in present-day India.

CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby, addressing the media on Friday, said the party would mobilise people across the country to challenge the BJP-RSS combine’s attempts to exploit global conflict and domestic terror incidents for political gains. “We are witnessing a regime that has surrendered India’s foreign policy to imperialist pressures and is using terrorism and war hysteria to deepen the communal divide at home,” Baby said.

In a strongly worded resolution, the CPI(M) condemned the ongoing Israeli military aggression in Gaza, describing it as a “genocidal campaign aimed at the complete destruction and annexation of Palestinian land.” The party criticised the Indian government for maintaining military and intelligence cooperation with Israel despite mounting civilian casualties.

“The BJP government must immediately halt the export of arms and sever all military and security ties with Israel,” Baby demanded. “Instead of standing firmly for the Palestinian people as per India’s long-standing foreign policy, the Modi regime has turned into an enabler of Zionist aggression, merely to please its global masters,” the resolution said.

The Central Committee announced that the entire party machinery would organise immediate nationwide protests against Israeli actions and the Indian government’s silence. “It is not only a question of foreign policy but of our moral and constitutional commitment to justice and human rights,” said Baby.

The CPI(M) accused the Modi government of undermining India’s independent foreign policy tradition, particularly in the Global South, by drawing closer to the United States and Israel. Referring to reports of pending trade and technology agreements, the party warned that Indian strategic autonomy was being sacrificed for crony capitalist interests.

RSS-BJP’s Communal Polarisation After the Pahalgam Terror Attack

Referring to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, the CPI(M) said the incident was being cynically used by the RSS-BJP combine to whip up communal sentiment and further marginalised Muslims and Kashmiris.

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir responded to the heinous act with unity and protest against terrorism. But the RSS-BJP used the tragedy to conduct a hate campaign against Muslims. This is an attempt to disrupt the unity of our people and communalise national security,” said Baby.

The party denounced the “weaponisation” of military operations, particularly ‘Operation Sindoor,’ for electoral gains, saying Prime Minister Modi’s speeches in Bihar and West Bengal were clear attempts to convert tragedy into political capital. “He says the operation has been paused, not ended. This means it’s being reserved as a political tool to be revived as and when needed,” Baby charged.

The CPI(M) further alleged that government-backed troll armies targeted victims’ families, army officials, and even India’s foreign service personnel with hate speech, while the BJP leadership remained conspicuously silent. “This silence is not passive. It is a form of tacit approval,” the party said.

RSS’s Dubious Role

As the country marks 50 years since the Emergency (1975–77), CPI(M) announced a week-long campaign to defend democratic values and expose what it called the “hypocrisy” of the RSS, which the BJP often projects as a champion of civil liberties.

“The RSS claims it was at the forefront of the anti-Emergency movement. Nothing could be further from the truth. Then RSS chief Balasaheb Deoras wrote a letter to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi extending full support to the emergency rule,” Baby stated.

“There is now an undeclared emergency in the country, the present government, driven by RSS ideology, is following the same authoritarian playbook — jailing dissenters, criminalising protest, stifling the press, and using agencies to hound the opposition. This campaign will expose the continuity of authoritarianism from the Emergency era to today’s neo-fascism,” he added.

Referring to the current RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement on the two-nation theory, Baby reminded him of RSS’s ideology of Akhand Bharat as making it a Hindu Rashtra.

On the census issue, Baby said the government should immediately call an all-party meeting on delimitation, as its announcement of the schedule for Census 2027 has led to apprehensions about the “intentions” behind the exercise.

The union government, after deliberate and inordinate delay, was finally forced to announce that it will conduct the general census in 2027 and along with it, the caste census. Various apprehensions are being expressed about the intentions of the government over the modalities it intends to follow. The government should immediately convene an all-party meeting and discuss these issues,” he said.

According to the Constitution, an increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats as per population has been frozen till 2026 and the next delimitation should be based on a census after 2026. The Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday said Home Minister Amit shah has already made it clear that concerns of the southern states will be taken care of and discussions will be held at an appropriate time.

The CPI(M) warned that the centralisation of power under the Modi government, coupled with the bypassing of Parliament and undermining of federal institutions, represents a grave threat to Indian democracy. “What we are witnessing today is a creeping coup on the Constitution,” Baby said.

Beyond communalism and foreign policy, CPI(M) also accused the government of spreading economic misinformation. While the BJP boasts that India is becoming the world’s fourth-largest economy, he pointed out that this ignores the country’s abysmal per capita income, rampant inequality, and worsening unemployment.

“The truth is that the rich are getting richer and the poor are sliding further into misery,” said Baby. “Privatisation of defence, nuclear power, and mining is not only unconstitutional but dangerous to national sovereignty.”

The party expressed alarm over the government’s willingness to amend India’s nuclear liability laws to accommodate US corporations and warned against the opening of strategic sectors to private and foreign players. “Selling out our national assets in the name of reforms is a betrayal of our people,” said Baby.

Campaigns and Mass Mobilisations Ahead

To counter what it views as a broad attack on democracy, federalism, and secularism, Baby said the CPI(M) will hold a week-long campaign in June against terrorism, war mongering and efforts to spread communal hatred, using the Pahalgam terrorist attack. He will also lead a delegation of Lok Sabha MPs Amra Ram, K Radhakrishnan and Su Venkatesan and Rajya Sabha MPs John Brittas, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya and AA Rahim.

It also condemned the government’s attempt to subvert the Supreme Court’s ruling on governors’ powers, calling it an attack on federalism.

“The time has come to fight back — not just against the visible failures, but against the deeper design to turn India into a theocratic, militarised corporate state,” Baby said.
