Maktoob Media’s X Account Withheld in India; Editorial Team Decries Attack on Press Freedom

Date:

NEW DELHI — Maktoob Media, a digital news outlet known for its independent and minority-focused journalism, said on Thursday that its official X (formerly Twitter) account has been withheld in India following a legal demand from the Indian government.

The action came without prior notice to the editorial team, who said they were not informed of the specific reasons for the move. The editorial team said in a statement, called the move an attack on press freedom.

“We have no knowledge of the reason for the government’s arbitrary action. It is an assault on press freedom,” the team said in a statement shared on other platforms.

Maktoob said it will continue reporting “at a time when truth is becoming a casualty.” In its statement, the outlet urged supporters to help amplify its work.

“At this hour of crisis, we ask our allies to share links from our website to help people access our reporting. We are many, many more than them,” the statement said.
