BHOPAL — The festive season has ignited a fresh political clash in Madhya Pradesh, with the BJP and Congress at odds over the closure of meat shops during Chaitra Navratri. While Hindu devotees observe the nine-day festival, the debate has intensified between religious sentiments and the livelihoods of meat traders.

BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma has demanded the shutdown of meat shops during Navratri, stating, “Those who speak of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb (composite culture) should now respect Hindu faith. If we avoid meat for a few days, will anyone starve? For Hindu-Muslim unity, sentiments of Hindus must be honoured.”

The Congress, however, has hit back, arguing that the move would harm traders dependent on the meat trade. Party spokesperson Firoz Siddiqui said, “Unemployment is already rampant. Before shutting shops, the government must compensate these families for nine days of lost earnings. How will they survive?”

The controversy comes amid simultaneous preparations for Eid-ul-Fitr by Muslims and Navratri by Hindus, raising questions over balancing religious customs with economic realities. The BJP insists the closure aligns with Hindu traditions, while the Congress warns of financial distress for small traders.

With neither side backing down, the issue has become yet another flashpoint in Madhya Pradesh’s ongoing political battles.
