NEW DELHI — A Muslim youth was waylaid by a group of bike-borne Holi revellers and thrashed mercilessly after ascertaining his religious identity. The incident occurred in the Uttar Pradesh city of Baghpat on Friday.
The victim, identified as Shamim, was on his way to his home when some people on a motorbike stopped him in the city’s Kotwali area on Nirojpur Road and after asking him his name started beating him mercilessly. Later, some others joined the assaulters and beat Shamim ruthlessly.

Media reports identified one of the assaulters as Pravesh. He was playing Holi with his friends and apparently, all of them were in an inebriated condition.
Shamim was seriously injured as the culprits attacked him with bricks and sticks. As some locals arrived at the scene, the assaulters fled from the spot leaving Shamim badly bruised.
The police are investigating the matter. Someone made a video of the incident, which has now gone viral.
The victim has lodged a complaint at the police station and demanded strict action against the culprits. City Kotwali in-charge Dixit Kumar Tyagi said that the matter is being investigated. He also assured that the culprits would be apprehended soon.
