BHOPAL -– A recent announcement by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to rename 54 villages in Dewas district has stirred a controversy. The decision, which involves changing the names of villages linked to Muslim historical figures, has been taken by the government allegedly as a step toward reflecting local sentiments.

However, the move has sparked backlash, with critics warning that it could heighten communal divisions and erase the region’s diverse historical identity.

At a ceremony in Pipalrawan village, Chief Minister Yadav formally accepted a proposal from BJP District President Rai Singh Sendhu to rename several villages in the district. The district president argued that the name changes were in line with the wishes of local residents. Following this, the Chief Minister directed the district collector to initiate the necessary administrative actions to implement the name changes. Among the affected villages are Muradpur, Haiderpur, Shamsabad, and Islamnagar, which will be renamed to Murlipur, Hirapur, Shyampur, and Ishwarpur, respectively.

“The change is about reclaiming our cultural heritage,” said Sendhu, further suggesting that the new names would reflect more traditional and culturally significant elements. “This move is crucial in eliminating symbols of colonialism and restoring our roots,” he added.

While some supporters of the move argue that it reflects the cultural aspirations of the people, others see it as part of a broader effort to erase the Islamic heritage and history that is an integral part of the region’s past. “Renaming villages tied to Muslim figures is a clear attempt to erase the cultural diversity that has shaped this land for centuries,” said Dr Meera Shah, a historian based in Bhopal. “This isn’t about preserving culture; it’s about rewriting history to suit a specific narrative.”

The decision has caused concern in villages such as Shamsabad, where residents have expressed mixed emotions about the renaming. “The name of our village has been part of our identity for generations. Changing it now feels like we’re losing a part of our history,” said Sarvesh, a long-time resident. “We want to progress, but not at the expense of forgetting our roots.”

The decision has led to differing opinions among political and social commentators. While some argue that renaming the villages is a necessary step to promote cultural pride, others fear it could exacerbate communal tensions in an already diverse society. “This decision risks deepening divisions between communities. India is a land of pluralism, and changing village names will only fuel more discord,” said journalist Ayesha Malik.

This is not the first time the Chief Minister has announced such name changes. In January also, Yadav declared plans to rename 11 villages in Shajapur district, along with three villages in Ujjain, including Maulana, Ghazni Khedi, and Jahangirpur. The renaming of Maulana village to Vikram Nagar raised alarms about the motivations behind these actions.

As the administrative process for the renaming moves forward, local communities are closely monitoring the situation. Whether this change will bring about unity or further divide the region remains uncertain, but it is clear that the debate over the preservation of historical identity and cultural heritage in Madhya Pradesh is far from settled.
