MUMBAI – In a move underscoring the importance of democratic participation, madrasas across Mumbai and Thane have declared a public holiday on Wednesday, November 20, to enable teachers and students to cast their votes. The decision has been hailed as a proactive effort to instill the values of citizenship and democracy within the community. Scholars and school officials have called upon their communities to participate actively, emphasising that voting is both a right and a responsibility.
Maulana Abdul Quddus Shakir Hakimi, spokesperson for Madrasa Relations Mumbai and Thane, said the decision was taken in consultation with school officials to ensure maximum participation in the democratic process. “Voting is not just a duty; it is a hallmark of responsible citizenship,” he told Clarion India. “Our scholars played a significant role in India’s independence, and the right to vote is a continuation of this legacy. Through voting, citizens shape a government that works for the public good, and it is imperative that we do not lag in fulfilling this responsibility.”
Maulana Hakimi also highlighted the critical role of religious schools in fostering civic engagement. “We have urged all students and teachers to make voting a priority and to lead by example. It is through these small acts of responsibility that we build a stronger, more inclusive democracy,” he added.
The message resonated across institutions, with other leaders reiterating the importance of active participation. Maulana Altaf Rahmani, head of Jamia Rahmania in Kandivali, stressed the significance of the occasion. “Today is not just a holiday but an opportunity to fulfill a vital democratic obligation. We must ensure that we not only participate ourselves but also encourage others to vote. This is how we contribute to the nation’s progress,” he said.
Deputy Nazim of Darul Uloom Hanafia Rizviyya, Qari Niaz Ahmed Qadri, echoed similar sentiments. “Our madrasa announced a holiday to ensure that every member of our institution participates in voting. It is a small but meaningful step towards honouring the sacrifices of our forefathers who fought for this country’s freedom. Strengthening the democratic process is a responsibility we must all embrace,” he stated.
This initiative by religious schools has sparked discussions about the role of educational institutions in promoting civic responsibility. Speaking on the matter, social activist Faizan Ansari lauded the decision, stating, “Encouraging students and teachers to vote sets an excellent example for others. It shows that religious schools are not just centres of learning but also pillars of social and civic values.”
Locals, too, expressed their support. A voter from Mumbai, Ali Abbas, shared, “The efforts of madrasas to emphasise voting are commendable. It inspires the younger generation to understand the power of their vote and its impact on society.”
Many scholars tied this democratic participation to the historical contributions of India’s Muslim community in the fight for independence. “The freedom we enjoy today was hard-earned, and participating in elections is a way to honour the sacrifices of our elders,” said Maulana Hakimi. “By voting, we reaffirm our commitment to a democratic and inclusive India.”
In addition to encouraging their communities, religious leaders also called on the broader public to vote responsibly. “We must choose leaders who prioritise the welfare of the underprivileged and work towards the progress of all citizens,” said Maulana Rahmani.
As the voting process unfolds, the efforts of religious schools have set an inspiring precedent. Their call for active civic participation has not only highlighted the importance of voting but also reinforced the role of educational institutions in nation-building.
