Jamiat Wants to Place Minority Commission’s Report on Delhi Violence in High Court

Date:

The Jamiat has filed a petition in the HC seeking constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the February-end violence in the national capital that killed 53 people and destroyed thousands of properties.

During Tuesday hearing of the petition, the Jamiat submitted that it supported the minority panel’s report and wanted to place it on record of the court, says LiveLaw.in.

However, appearing for the Delhi Police, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta contested Jamiat’s move and submitted that the parties should stick to the materials already on record. He also said that he would like to file a reply in case minority panel’s report is filed before the court.

Jamiat and some others have moved the court seeking SIT probe and preservation of CCTV footage of the violence. The Delhi Police filed its common reply to the petitioners.

However, Jamiat on Tuesday told the division bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan that it has not yet received the common reply filed by the Delhi Police. On this, Solicitor General Mehta assured Jamiat that Delhi Police’s common reply will be sent to them within an hour.

The court will hear the matter on July 27.

The Delhi Minorities Commission last week released its 130-page fact-finding report on the North-east Delhi violence. The report, with testimonies of several victims and other evidence, is said to be an exhaustive account of the origins and causes of the three-day long violence and damage to properties including religious places. The fact-finding panel was headed by Supreme Court lawyer M.R. Shamshad.
