NEW DELHI — Provocative slogans rent the air as Hindutva groups on Tuesday protested the killing of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) member in Mumbai’s Dharavi area.

The slogans, reportedly raised in the presence of police personnel, called for slaughtering Muslims.

Media reports reaching here on Wednesday said Arvin Vaishya was murdered over a personal dispute. But the Hindutva group gave the incident a communal colour by claiming that he was killed by Jihadis, referring to Muslims.

The protesters shouted slogans “Jab Mulle Kate Jayenge, Ram Ram Chillayenge” (When Muslims are slaughtered, they will shout Ram Ram). websites which track hate crimes in India posted the video of the controversial slogans on their social media accounts. The video shows that the provocative slogans were raised even as police personnel stood by.

Hindutva groups took out Vaishya’s funeral procession after posting posters at different locations claiming that the victim was killed by Jihadis.

The protest started on Monday and continued till Tuesday when there were also reports of violence. Stones were pelted forcing police to resort to a lathicharge.

There are also videos of an autorickshaw being overturned, a man being overpowered and assaulted and a shop being vandalised by the protesters.

Vaishya, 26, was allegedly stabbed to death in front of police personnel in Dharavi Sunday following which two persons were arrested.

According to police, Vaishya was murdered by the two when he intervened in a dispute involving the father of one of the accused.

The two arrested persons have been identified as Niyaz Aslam Sheikh (24) and Arif Mohammad Asif Sheikh (23), residents of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Dharavi.

According to the police, Vaishya and his friend Siddhesh Gore were walking in Dharavi Sunday night when they saw that Niyaz’s father, Aslam, arguing with another person over crossing the road.

When Vaishya intervened in the matter Aslam got angry at him and a scuffle ensued. Subsequently, Niyaz, Arif and two others allegedly assaulted Vaishya, the police said.
