NEW DELHI — A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and a Hindutva leaning businessman have been arrested in Kolar district of Karnataka for their anti-Muslim Facebook post.

The Facebook post, which was reportedly uploaded at the weekend, criticised Muslims on the issue of paying taxes. The post read: “31st July is nearing. Please pay your taxes on time. After all your taxes are someone’s subsidy.”

Local BJP leader Navin Jain and businessman Chetan Bantia shared the post on their respective Facebook pages, raising anger among the Muslim community, media reports said.

Late Friday night, members of the Muslim community gathered in large numbers at a police station in Kolar’s Robertsonpet township and demanded the arrest of the duo and their unconditional apology.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Panduranga arrived at the spot and held talks with leaders of the community and persuaded them to end the protest. He also assured strict action against the accused, reports reaching here said on Tuesday.
