MP: Police Beat up Dalit Sanitary Worker for Overtaking Their Vehicle in Khajuraho

NEW DELHI — Madhya Pradesh Police have ordered an inquiry into allegations that a Dalit sanitary worker was brutally assaulted by some policemen in Khajuraho town.

This came after sanitary worker Rohit Valmiki alleged that he was mercilessly thrashed by police personnel for overtaking their official vehicles, media reports reaching here said on Wednesday.

Rohit Valmiki claimed that while heading home on his motorcycle on July 21, he overtook vehicles belonging to personnel from the police and electricity departments. Following this, Valmiki claimed that some policemen accused him of reckless driving, abused him, and subsequently took him to a police station where he was physically assaulted.

Valmiki’s brother corroborated the account, stating that the victim was taken to the police station and thrashed by the officers.

The Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) is conducting an investigation into the allegation, Superintendent of Police Agam Jain announced.

“Statements of the concerned persons are recorded. We will take strict action after investigation,” media reports cited Jain as saying.
