NEW DELHI — For his groundbreaking innovation — a soil monitoring device designed to enhance agricultural productivity while reducing costs — Muneer Khan has been honored with the prestigious ‘Young Scientist Award.’

The award was presented to him at a ceremony here, attended by dignitaries including Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Khan hails from a nondescript village Gauriya in Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, located some 400 km east of the national capital. He is currently an applied scientist at Harvard University and owns a US-based startup of AI Best Glasses.

Speaking after receiving the award, Khan explained the device’s capabilities, stating:  “Farmers can assess soil quality and nutrient deficiencies using this device, enabling precise application of fertilisers and water.”

The device, which has received a patent from the Government of India, utilises technology developed under the guidance of Dr. Durgesh Pant at Pantnagar University. It consists of two pen-like sensors that connect with a mobile app, providing real-time data on soil conditions. This information empowers farmers to make informed decisions about crop management, optimizing yields without excessive fertiliser use.

“Muneer Khan’s innovation addresses the critical issue of soil degradation,” remarked a spokesperson from the award committee. “His device offers a practical solution for sustainable agriculture, particularly beneficial for small farmers.”

Muneer Khan’s journey began with a B.Tech degree from a college in Uttarakhand, followed by MS and MPhil degrees from Columbia University. He has previously been recognised with the International Young Scientist Award.

The ‘Young Scientist Award’ recognises Muneer Khan’s dedication to advancing agricultural technology and his commitment to empowering farmers globally with innovative solutions. His contributions underscore the transformative potential of science in addressing pressing agricultural challenges.
