Maryam Junaid Tops College With Exceptional CGPA in Astrophysics

The 22-year-old student of Mumbai’s St. Xavier’s College aspires to join ISRO, credits success to dedication and self-study

MUMBAI – Maryam Muhammad Junaid Karari, a 22-year-old resident of Nayangar, has achieved a significant academic milestone by securing a remarkable CGPA of 9.75 out of 10 in the final year astrophysics examination at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. This achievement has further fuelled Maryam’s aspirations to pursue a career as a scientist at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Maryam, who has received numerous awards for her academic excellence, including the prestigious ‘Inspirational Scholarship’ from the Central Government, expressed her dedication to academics and her dream of becoming a scientist. She has been awarded Rs80,000 annually under this scholarship since 2019.

Reflecting on her educational journey, Maryam said she began her schooling at NH English Academy School in Mira Road, where she consistently excelled academically and was recognised as the Head Girl. She received the ‘Student of the Year’ award from the Times of India in 2016 and secured second place in an essay writing competition organised by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers.

“My dream is to become a scientist,” Maryam affirmed. “I am currently preparing for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research NET exam to pursue a career in research and contribute to ISRO.”

A distinctive aspect of Maryam’s academic journey is her commitment to self-study. She has never taken tuition classes and devotes 5-6 hours daily to studying at home, a practice she has maintained since her school days.

Maryam’s success at St. Xavier’s College underscores her dedication, passion for astrophysics, and determination to achieve her career goals in scientific research.
